Some days I stay up late into the night meticulously writing Yay-Today blog posts. Other days I wake up too early, check Twitter to find out that the National Frozen Yogurt Day is today(!), Monday, February 6 (not Sunday, February 5 like I may have originally said in the Weekend Round-Up- sorry about that), and scramble to throw together a post about how you really can go get your FREE froyo at all Yogurtland locations today between 4:00-7:00pm. Thankfully, FREE froyo is a pretty simple concept.

So here’s the deal- you get yourself to any Yogurtland location (Capitol Hill, Wallingford, U-District or Bellevue) between 4:00 and 7:00pm. (And no, I promise not to judge you if you visit multiple locations. In fact, if you are that passionate about froyo, you and I should probably hang out in real life more often.) You stand in line (it’s free yogurt, there will definitely be a line) and then fill your cup with as much yogurt and as many self-serve toppings (hint: mochi) as humanly possible. I may have been known to tap the cup a few times to let the yogurt “settle” and allow for additional toppings before. Maybe. Then you sit and eat your delicious treat, preferably in front of the poor souls still waiting in line.

I apologize for the earlier post about this happening on Sunday. But this time the FREE froyo is real. I’m going to go ahead and blame my error on the fact that I’m currently in the midst of a crazy sugar boycott, which results in a bit of brain fog. It also means that I can’t actually take advantage of said FREE froyo goodness, so I’m begging you to raise a spoonful for your homie.

Okay kids- go and eat your heart out. And if you want to tease me with pictures of your free froyo or just tell the Yay-Today crew about other ways to celebrate National Frozen Yogurt Day, talk to us on Twitter, Facebook or in the comments section below!

February brings us many gifts: a break from my neurotic New Year’s Resolutions (cleanse? what cleanse?), a 3-day weekend for a holiday that nobody actively celebrates (Presidents’ Day, right?) and sunsets being delayed until at least 4:45pm. (That’s big for me.) But it also means Valentines Day, which, for me at least, can be very hit-or-miss. Don’t get me wrong- I love love. It’s awesome and my husband is cool. But overpriced pre-fixe menus, an onslaught of shitty chick flicks and well-intentioned coworkers booby-trapping the office crappy chocolate do NOT make me feel all affectionate and swoony. Rejecting tradition doesn’t mean that you have to go all bah-humbug though- just get creative and celebrate in a slightly non-traditional way. Today I’m her to suggest that you spend Valentines Day with a little city pride and check out the Seattle Underground Special Valentines Day Underworld Tour, where you and your honey-bunny (or BFF) can learn all about the more scandalous side of our fair city while sipping champagne and eating some Theo chocolate.

I know that traipsing through Seattle’s scandal-laden catacombs is a far cry from your stereotypical steak and lobster, but the Valentines Day Underworld Tour sure sounds like a lot more fun. It takes the regular Underground Tour (which is at the top of my unwritten list of “touristy things to do in Seattle that are actually fun even if you aren’t a tourist”) and kicks it up a notch. The subject matter (think prostitution, corruption and opium dens) is for adults only, so tickets are only available to those 21 and over. After you learn all about the gory details, you return to Doc Maynard’s Public House for a champagne toast and Theo Chocolates sampling. Bonus: professional photographers will be on hand to snap pictures of you (only from your good side).

So skip the $200 meal and Che Fancypants and buy a couple of $25 tickets to The Underworld Tour. You get a whole new set of fun dinner party trivia, some champagne and chocolate, and you won’t be too full of lobster risotto to do it after the big date.

Hey-o! I love the hope this week is bringing. I’ve put away my big, puffy coat for a little bit and supposedly there’s sun and even warmer temps on the horizon. It’s like that silly snowstorm never happened and I’m starting to look at my garden in a whole new light again. Of course, I should know better and realize it’s still winter and every February in Seattle brings this little tease and I’ll be back in my big, puffy coat until at least March – but for now, I’m living in this happy, warmer world until it strikes again. With that, here’s your weekend:

-Fellini. Films. Free! The Hunt Club does is right, tonight.

-Frye Museum is putting on a Ladies Musical Club even and ya’ll are invited.

-If you live or love Redmond then head on over to their library and review the Opera, Orphee et Euridice.

-In case you watch that little thing called the Super Bowl, Row House Café has got you covered. Make a reservation and get 25% off your bucket of beers. Plus, Happy Hour prices start right after Brunch.

-And if you don’t watch that little thing called the Super Bowl, then head to The Pink Door for SuperBelle and enjoy aerialist performances while playing backgammon and getting pampered with the on-site manicurist. Shit, I may have to cancel my plans…

-In further FREE food news, Cafe Kanape is celebrating their 1 Year Anniversary with $6 martinis and FREE appetizers on Saturday night. Munch on some FREE piroshky and throw back a much-needed cocktail.

And there you have it. Let us know in the comments if we missed any must-attend events. And share your love for us our Facebook and Twitter. See you on Monday, same time same place.

When we bought our home, one of the major reasons we loved it was because we didn’t have to do much to change it. Small things here and there, but overall nothing that would cost us a brand new car to fix. But of course, the things we thought were small, that we could probably do on our own suddenly became much bigger projects. A paint job turns into a tile job and out of nowhere you’re uprooting your entire small bathroom because the green paint doesn’t go with the rest of the décor.

And while I wish that I could be on Holmes on Homes, wherein some TV handyman makes my bathroom all shiny and new, the reality is we’re going to have to hire professionals. So we got a few quotes, met a few shady contractors (re: they are all shady) and I finally found something that could be hopeful.

Meet Casa Latina. They’re tagline, Dignity and Opportunity, already eases me wherein I feel like I’m doing something right by hiring these folks. Unlike the people you see out by Home Depot, these workers are covered by Casa (which means if they fuck up, it’s on them). The workers are skilled and trained in whatever you need done. An easy paint job? They’ve got a guy (or girl). Weeding the garden for Spring? Check. Need someone to clean your house? Household Helpers Project to the rescue! TILING MY BATHROOM. Yes, they do that too.

Hiring a worker couldn’t be easier. You just call the Center and place an order for what you need and the day/time you need someone. They’ll be dropped off and ready to work. It’s genius!

Hourly wages start at $12!!!! And best of all, the kind of thing that warms my heart, is that these workers keep 100% of their pay. No slimy contractor takes a cut. The people who actually sweat for you, get your money. 750 immigrants enroll in their program every year, where these workers are given English classes, get introduced to small business owners and learn to develop leadership skills. It all just makes me feel so giddy inside, and I love that everything about what Casa Latina preaches seems legit. Give them a try and let us know how it goes. I’ll be sure to do the same.

Dear men of Seattle,

Hey there. It’s time we sat down and had a talk. You know that I love you, right? Okay good. Because while you have a lot of qualities that I find irresistible, like how you are always around to fix my computer and the fact that I never have to feel self-conscious about how pale I am when I stand next to you, there is one thing that’s been driving me crazy for a while now. It’s your wardrobe. I mean, I know that guide books describe Seattle fashion sense as “aggressively plain,” and I knew that the fleece and Tevas are super functional for our rainy climate, but seriously guys, it’s time to step it up a bit. The 24/7 plaid just isn’t cutting it. But don’t worry, there’s help out there even for you- Built For Man, the local menswear designer, is here to stage an intervention at Bako: A Taste for Fashion. And before you go getting all squirrely, relax- yes, it’s a fashion show, but it’s a fashion show featuring gourmet Chinese food and drinks. Yes, it’s true, noodles and booze really do solve everybody’s problems.

Bako: A Taste for Fashion happens next Wednesday, February 8. It’s a fashion show, Seattle-style. Instead of shelling out a bunch of money to watch angry-looking models strut their stuff, you can reserve a FREE ticket and spend your evening at Bako in Capitol Hill mingling with friends, enjoying complimentary snacks, throwing back a few drinks and listening to DJ LA Kendall. You can pick up some fashion tips (my advice: get yourself one nice sweater that isn’t appropriate for cycling and find some pants that aren’t described as “super skinny” or “wide leg”- the proper fit can be a beautiful thing) or just go and ogle the models (which is probably what I’ll be doing).

So step it up Seattle! Whether you’re a guy looking for some cool clothes or a girl looking to give your man a makeover, Bako: A Taste for Fashion is a fun, FREE way to dip your pinkie toe into the world of fashion. And even if you decide that you really do love the feel of GoreTex next to your skin, hey, at least you got some free food.

You guys know I love to eat- I talk about it occasionally on this blog. But something you may not know about me is that I’m also obsessed with puzzles. You know all that time I spend with my head buried in my phone? Well, half the time I’m not even texting somebody cooler than you about how lame whatever I’m doing in real life is. If you look closely, you’ll see me heads down in the middle of a fierce Words With Friends game (Aubreyelf) or catching up on the New York Times Crossword app. I love me a puzzle, and I love a good meal, so I’m doubly excited to to tell you about the Savor Seattle Hunt, a month-long scavenger hunt across some of the best eateries in all of Seattle. Want to solve puzzles, explore cool eateries and have the chance to win gift certificates all over town for FREE? Then read on!

So here’s the deal. You grab a few friends (or not- you can play solo too) and make sure everybody is liking the Savor Seattle Facebook page and following @SavorSeattle on Twitter. Sweet. Then all you do is check both pages daily starting February 1 to get the daily clue. Once it’s released, you spend the rest of the day slacking off at work and solving the puzzle. Some puzzles you can solve from the comfort of your own couch, but others require you leave the house and go to a physical location. I know that’s a pain, and it’s probably going to be raining that day, but you can win a prize EVERY SINGLE DAY- they can’t make it too easy.

Prizes are awarded daily (Sundays excluded- you get a day of rest, so carb up) in the form of gift certificates to restaurants that Savor Seattle totally adores. (Ever been on one of their food tours? I have!. You’re in for a treat.) Some are small, some are big, but they’re all free money, which we wholeheartedly approve of. And if you do win one (or more) of the daily puzzles, you get entered in the super-duper ultimate maga prize giveaway. On Monday, March 5, all winners will be invited to a swanky prize ceremony where Tom Douglas himself will draw a winner who will receive $1,000 in dining gift certificates to all Tom Douglas eateries. (Do you know how many biscuits at Serious Bakery that is? Me neither, but it’s a LOT.)

Puzzles make you smarter, and you need all the help you can get, so go get on this. Let us know if you’re playing on our Facebook page, via Twitter, or in the comments section below. Good luck everybody!

Suddenly, silent movies are as popular as ironic facial hair and Pinterest. First they started playing them for free at The Sorrento Hotel, then The Artist came out and got nominated for a bunch of cool film awards, and now they’re taking over The Paramount Theater. If you want to know what all the fuss is about, then I suggest you head to The Paramount tonight, where they’re playing a classic silent film accompanied by live organ music.

Silent Movie Mondays is an annual showing of classic films that are so good they don’t even need any pesky dialogue. This year it’s all about Academy Award winners- and these are movies that won before the Oscars got all weird and political. Every Monday night you can catch a fabulous flick with live musical accompaniment for just $10! Have a free Monday evening coming up? Then go see Street Angel on January 30th, Last Command on February 6th, or go celebrate Valentines Day a little early by watching Wings on February 13. Sure, these movies aren’t free like the ones at The Sorrento Hotel, but these are on the big screen in a fancy old theater and feature an amazing live soundtrack while you watch!

The Paramount isn’t just the place to go to see awesome bands and musical theater- it’s also the home of the historic Mighty Wurlitzer organ. That’s a super-fancy organ that you should be really excited about- there are only 3 of them left in their original environment in the whole world. Built in 1928, it’s pitch-perfect for creating the perfect soundtrack to whatever old-timey movie you choose to see.

So where do you stand on the whole “silent movies are the new 3d movies” thing? Tell us if you’re a fan on Twitter or Facebook, or in the comments below. Or, if you’re as obsessed with Pinterest as I am, go check us out over there too!

Are you guys so excited about the weekend? It’s going to be awesome. The snow is gone, the sun is supposed to shine all day Saturday, and there are so many fun things happening in Seattle. If you want to be just like me, you can celebrate my birthday by dressing as Wonder Woman! If you would prefer to do your own, non-costumed thing, I’ve still got you covered. Rock on with your weekend, Seattle.

-Last week we told you to start your weekend with free wine. This week we’re responsible adults who think you should check out the new donation-based hot yoga class at Sweat Hot Yoga. It’s perfect for beginners (aka, they go light on the heat for you). Hot yoga is the perfect way to pretox before you start your weekend imbibement. The class runs 5:30-6:45pm.

-Aubrey already told y’all about all the delicious free food happening this weekend. To recap: Samoa cookies, lamb and wine, and froyo. Let your stomach be your guide.

-Head to the Sorrento Hotel for Fellini Film Friday. FREE Fellini Film Friday. 8pm, fills up fast.

-The sun won’t be a stranger Saturday, so we have a few outdoor activities for you. First, celebrate the Lunar New Year in the ID with the Lunar New Year Food Walk. $2 tastes of cuisine from China, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, and beyond. 11am-8pm; download the food map here.

-I just got my very first iPhone and now I’m addicted to Instagram, obvi. If you are like me and Instagram (or other photo app) has made you believe you are a very special and talented photographer, head to Zeitgeist Coffee in Pioneer Square at 3pm on Saturday for the Be Mobile! Photowalk/Shootout. There will be challenges and prizes!

-Are you a hairy dude? Are you a lady who knows a hairy dude? Drag your burly man to the High Dive at 1pm on Sunday for the Beard and Stache Fest Contestant Picture Party. Have your picture taken and see it displayed at a select location. All pictures will raise money for Treehouse 4 Kids.

-I’m excited about this one: Faire Cafe continues Long Talking Bad Conditions Blues Reading Series. Featured this Sunday at 6pm: National Book Award Winner Charles Johnson, Stacey Levine, Nicole Hardy, Luke Johnson, and Greg Wrenn.

-Calling all Trekkies! Theater Schmeater is hosting Star Trek Trivia. $5 at the door.

-I need some picture frames and I love sales, so I’ll be heading to West Elm this weekend, where all frames are 20% off until Feb. 13th. (Also on sale- lighting. This sounds random, but good lighting can seriously pump up your bedroom confidence, especially if you’re sickeningly pale like I am this time of year.)

-Finally, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Luckily for us, we live in Seattle, the home of Babeland. The fine ladies of Babeland have invited Miss Indigo Blue to teach a Stripping for Your Lover Workshop on Sunday night. Tickets are $35 but the skills last a lifetime.

That’s your weekend, darlings! Let us know in the comments if we missed any must-attend events. And share your photos from the Photowalk on our Facebook and Twitter. Have a good one!

Remember that New Year’s Resolution about only eating kale and flax seed oil for the month of January? Yeah, screw that. I don’t know what’s in the air lately, but the Yay-Today calendar is bubbling over with all kinds of delicious things to eat and drink in the next few days. Don’t fight it- resistance is futile when you’re staring in the face of free, delicious food. So embrace your inner fat kid and eat up Seattle. Here are just a few of my favorite free eats and drinks going on at a hotspot near you:

The Deathcake is back and it’s FREE! Swing by your nearest Cupcake Royale location between 5:00 and 7:00pm today (Thursday, January 26) for a Deathcake Party. Not only can you nosh on free samples of the richest, gooiest, most chocolatey chocolate cake around, you can swig Stumptown coffee and local booze at the same time. Screw saving your appetitie for dinner- Deathcake IS dinner!

Not only is Boka Kitchen and Bar handing out FREE cookies tomorrow, Friday Jan 27 between 11:00am and 1:00pm, they’re handing out homemade versions of my favorite Girl Scout creation- the Samoa. Take a walk and grab a carmelly, coconutty piece of happiness.

Menchies is opening another self-serve froyo palace in West Seattle on Saturday, Jan 28 and they’re giving away FREE froyo to celebrate! Jaunt over to Admiral Way for your FREE froyo between 11:00am and 1:00pm.

Since you ate dessert all weekend, change things up and end with something savory on Sunday. Dish it Up in Ballard is hosting a FREE Lamb Cooking Demo and Wine Tasting on Sunday, January 29. Chefs from La Bete and The Skillet Diner (yum and yum) will be teaching you how to make perfect meatballs and wintery lamb stew starting at 12:00pm, with wine and samples starting at 1:00pm. It’s the perfect post-farmers-market snack.

So who just totally slashed your grocery bill this week? Yeah, I’m pretty awesome. Tell me thanks in the comments section below, post pictures of you enjoying your free samples on our facebook page, or hop on twitter to tell us what else is happening this weekend that is amazing.
