Like every other person in America who occasionally wears pants that don’t have an elastic waistband (though I do remain unapologetic about my love for leggings- haters can discuss in the comments section below), I started off January with high hopes about eating a little lighter this month. No more dessert, a little less wine, more frequent trips to the gym, blah blah blah. But then fate came and punched me in the face yesterday when I read notmartha’s post about Curio Confection’s Charity Bake Sale at the Fremont Abbey Cafe. Not only is it a bake sale by what was my favoritest bakery ever in Seattle before it closed last year, not only is it in support of a great cause (The Mt. Adams Institute), but it’s also being joined by the Bushwick Book Club, my favorite literary-music event, which is performing original music based on my favorite book of all time, Alice in Wonderland.
There is no other interpretation than accepting the fact that some greater power is telling me to eat sugar.
Okay, so let me back up. Curio Confections was a to-die-for little bakery in Ravenna/U-District run by Maria Friedman. While it was only around for slightly longer than a year, it was the home of the best chocolate chip cookies I ever ate in Seattle. The tiny bakery also served a slew of hand-made marshmallows, cakes and sweet and savory pies (the savory ones made you feel virtuous). Oh, and they had wine. My knitting group made special treks there, and even held our own special events in the back room, including a baby shower, a bachelorette party pre-funk and a freaking pie contest. Any bakery that lets you host your own pie contest in their hallowed halls gets big points in my book.
So yeah, I’m up for pretty much anything that Maria Friedman does. The fact that she’s doing it for charity and being joined by the Bushwick Book Club on Friday makes it even MORE amazing. The fact that on Friday they’ll be singing songs about Alice in Wonderland practically gives me a sugar high, and the sweetest thing I ate yesterday was the a kale chip.
The bake sale happens Thursday 4:00-7:00pm and Friday 5:00-10:00pm at the Fremont Abbey Cafe. You really need to go to this, even if it conflicts with your “less dessert in 2012″ resolution. Just remember, you’re getting double points in your “be a better person and donate to good causes” resolution. In the end, we all win.
