Capitol Hill on Ice: You probably didn’t hear it here first

So unless you live under a rock (or in a tent near Westlake Mall/SCCC Campus), then you’ve probably already heard about the coolest news to hit Capitol Hill. Nope, they didn’t decide to tear down all those ugly condos. Rather, Cal Anderson Park is having their 1st Annual Ice Rink!!!

Opening day is today, at 11am and your last chance to do your best Kerrigan is on Saturday, December 24th. The rink closes at 10pm, so you’ll have plenty of time to bring your flask o’ holiday cheer to Neumos (and still wait 2 hours for your band to arrive ;-)

Tickets are a tad on the pricier than a Yay-Todayer like me would want to spend. But this is Capitol Hill chic, people. If you want to see a bunch of hipsters drunk skating, then you pay the $12 cash for 1 hour (includes skates, $6 for kids under 8) and you be happy with it! You can purchase advance tickets at Caffe Vita, Elliot Bay Book Company and Cure. And maybe if we’re all lucky they’ll post some kind of deal on their Twitter page.

Plus, if you’re worried about the rain, don’t be. This rink is tented. Next, you’re gonna tell me that we’ve achieved world peace. This shit is gonna be radical!

There isn’t much on their site as to where the rink will actually be – beyond the southwest corner of Cal Anderson Park, but where the heck do you plop a skating rink, a rental booth, Dante’s Inferno hot dogs and Caffe Vita serving hot cocoa, coffee and cider? My only guess is that the skating portion will occupy the long existing (and narrow) fountain that kids and dogs love to splash around in over the summer. And the vendors might be floating around the park’s grassy bits. But don’t quote me on this.

Instead, check it out for yourself. Heck, take pictures and share them with us. We, at Yay-Today, really want to re-enact our favorite ice skating movie ever (duh, The Cutting Edge) just so we can say “Toe Pick!” whilst trying not to slice off anyone’s fingers on the ice.
