Bellingham: It’s just plain cheaper there

Last week I spent some time in Bellingham, or what I like to call Seattle’s hippie cousin in the North. I always love it there – not just because the Co-op smells like patchouli and people say hi to you on the streets, but you guys Bham is CHEAP. I could go on and on about the places I always hit like Mallard Ice Cream or the Museum of Radio and Electricity, but instead I’m gonna talk about 2 newbies I discovered and that you need to check out ASAP:

  1. The Abbey Garden Tea Room: Nevermind their horrid website, this little place just screams cute. Go with your grandma or your best friend. High tea is whenever you want it and their combos of little bitty sammy’s and desserts and tea will have you so full and only run you $12-16. You can’t even get a single burger at Skillet for that price. Yeah, sure, I doubt anything is organic but they cut the friggin’ crust off the bread, the cream cheese is heavenly and the tea menu is a sight to see. Take that, you overpriced Seattle lunch truck burger.
  2. Nostalgia: I just love, love, LOVE this store. The lady that owns this vintage shop knows her stuff. From steampunk to 80s punk, the store doesn’t smell like mothballs and you can find clothes easily without feeling overwhelmed. I can’t stress enough how much shopping overwhelms me so the fact that I scored a pair of 1930s leather short boots – totally repurposed so I won’t have to fix them – for just $FORTY DOLLARS is pretty amazing in my world. These boots would’ve definitely run me $150 at the Anthro in downtown Seattle so I felt like I truly scored big on this find (and note to all of you, as of last Thursday she still had at least 3 pair left in various colors). Plus, the owner is probably the nicest person ever. I’m pretty sure that’s like a requirement in Bellingham, but it’s true – we talked and talked and talked, and if there is something I hate more than shopping is talking about shopping, so this is a true testament to her and her little store.

So go to Bellingham, experience these stores, support the local world and start growing your dreads. Take pictures and tell us what you eat/find. Hugs!

You don’t have to convince me of the joys of Bellingham. I went to school up there and miss it very much. Chuckanut Drive, the Pepper Sisters cafe, Whatcom Falls park, Village Books, Black Drop Coffehouse, sigh.
