It seems like there’s a hot new streaming music site every day- Grooveshark, Rdio, Spotify… it’s almost enough to make me wish for teh days of boomboxes and mixed tapes. Almost. In the meantime, I’ll go ahead and do my best trying to keep abreast of all the new ways to avoid having to listen to the radio (which, excluding our much-beloved KEXP, is pretty darn horrific). Having trouble choosing which music service to pledge your allegiance to? Well, turntable.fm has certainly found a way to pique my interest- they’re hosting a dance party pitting Seattle’s best spin doctors against New York City’s finest. Admission to this round-robin tournament featuring a mysterious but (and this is a direct quote from their website) “VERY special DJ” playing live for Seattle is just $10, essentially giving you VIP access to an all-night dance party for less than the cost of your average movie ticket.
Here’s how it works. You buy your ticket online, show up to FRED Wildlife Center (a very cool space on Olive in Capitol Hill) when doors open at 8:00pm and start your grooving. The party goes on until 1:00am and will feature house, techno, electro house and dubstep, “with some surprises thrown in there” (one of which is probably the much-hyped but very mysterious superstar guest DJ, I’m guessing).
So go shake your groove thing. And if you like the idea of free access to streaming music hand-selected by a wide variety of cubicle djs (you might find some undiscovered talent- or at least some people with good taste in music), check out turntable.fm.
