Movies for a Sunny Day: FREE Outdoor Movie Round-Up

When I lived in LA, movie theaters were the perfect place to go hide out from a summer heatwave. Now that I’ve put in some time in Seattle, there aren’t many movies that I can justify wasting valuable summer weather on. (That’s what the other 11 months of the year are for.) August, however, is the perfect storm for movie-lovers suffering from a little cabin fever- it seems like every park in and around Seattle turns into an outdoor movie theater. Not only is watching a movie outside on a cool summer night one of the most enjoyable experiences ever, it’s also way cheaper than heading to your local theater. Here are our favorite places to get your outdoor movie fix for $5 or less:

  • Fremont Outdoor Movies: On Saturday nights, the U-Park lot across from Theo Chocolates (everybody knows where that is) hosts food trucks, pre-show music and live entertainment. Tickets are $5, people start lining up at 6:15pm and movies still left on the 2011 schedule include Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski and the original 1982 version of Tron.
  • West Seattle Junction: FREE! If you’re looking for more family-friend fare, head to West Seattle, where they’ll be playing Airplane, Toy Story 1, Despicable Me and Jurassic Park this August. Gates open at 6:30pm.
  • Movies at the Mural: Check out a wide variety of FREE movies at the base of the Space Needle on weekend nights in August. Seating is first-come, first-serve and the movies, which include everything from Inception to Raiders of the Lost Ark to The Incredibles, start at 9:00pm.
  • Cinema on the Lawn: FREE! South Lake Union started their outdoor movie season early, but you can still make time to catch Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on Friday, August 12, outside the South Lake Union Discovery Center. Take the money you save on admission and check out the beer garden, which opens at 5:30 and is hosted by Brave Horse Tavern and Whole Foods.
  • Three Dollar Bill Cinema: If you love karaoke, glam rock and feathered hair, you’ll love the summer line-up playing in Volunteer Park this year. Their Rock & Roll Fantasy series will be showing Xanadu, Labyrinth, The Apple and Footloose on Friday nights in Capitol Hill.
  • Bollywood Panorama at Volunteer Park: Want your musical to have a little more global flavor? The Seattle Asian Art Museum is hosting FREE Bollywood musicals, including The Namesake on August 5, at the Volunteer Park Amphitheater. Bring an FM radio to hear everything.
  • Movies at Marymoor: Yes, it’s across the bridge, but Marymoor Park still gets the yay-today stamp of approval. Marymoor plays family-friendly movies (E.T., Up, Toy Story 3 and more) on Wednesday nights through the end of August. Seating opens at 7:00pm.
  • Moonlight Cinema at Red Hook: Woodinville’s most famous brewery is reliving the 80s with their summer movie series. On Thursday nights, the Redhook Grassy Bowl is showing the movies we grew up on (like Stripes, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Blues Brothers). Admission is $5, and yeah, I’m pretty sure you can get some beer there as well.

There’s another series in Magnuson Park – (http://www.epiceap.com/seattle-outdoor-movies/) and in the ID (http://www.seattle.gov/parks/downtown/). Because, yes, I love outdoor moves in this city so much that I keep a comprehensive list of them.

@Jenna- i LOVE that you have a list going!
@Faith- Maybe an outdoor movie can substitute for that drive-in we talked about?
