Weekend Round-Up: 5/27-5/30 Edition

Well, this weekend marks the unofficial start of summer… time to be a real Seattlite and do some Memorial Day grilling in the rain. Seriously people, even if it’s kind of gross and still cold enough to require leggings under your sundress, it’s still a three day weekend, and for that we can all be thankful. Maybe if we’re all extra-celebratory this weekend, it will be warm by Solstice. Here are our picks for Memorial Day Weekend 2011:

  • It’s Folklife! Let down your dreads and throw on your twirlin’ skirt (that goes for men and women) and soak up the free music, street performers and fragrant aroma that is Northwest Folklife. This year the hippies even went and made themselves some iPhone & Android apps to make navigating Seattle Center even easier.
  • If throwing some sausages on the grill isn’t enough, go to Bill the Butcher’s Magnolia location and learn how to make your own sausage in a FREE class.
  • Swing by Whole Foods Westlake on your way home Friday (or on your way to happy hour!)- Two Beers Brewing Co. will be there sampling their goods and handing out swag. It’s the perfect complement to their sample-rific Friday Night Bites.
  • If you couldn’t afford tickets to Sasquatch this year (or couldn’t deal with camping in the mud), listen to it streaming FREE on KEXP and NPR. (via SeattleMet)
  • If Kinect creeps you out, go 8-bit at the Seattle Retro Gaming Expo at Hotel Deca this weekend. Modding lessons, nerdcore rappers and an old-school video game tournament called Battle for Seattle? My heart is literally going pitter-patter right now.
  • Love cookbooks but hate to pay full price? A local legend of a cookbook collector is hosting a used cookbook sale this Saturday from 1:00 – 5:00 pm and the food blogosphere cannot stop talking about it. This is basically the Nordstrom’s Semi-Annual Sale for food-o-philes.
  • SIFF is in full swing, so get out and support your indie moviemakers. We listed our picks already and we’ll have more reviews and upcoming recs to share with you on Monday. Hey, at least you’ll stay dry!

If that isn’t enough for you, well, I have nothing clever to say. So I’ll shut up and let you enjoy your weekend. Tell us what your big plans are on facebook, twitter or in the comments below!
