SIFF is one of my favorite times of the year- it’s like a little part of Hollywood comes to Seattle and sprinkles it’s magic fairy dust all around. Sure, people walk down the red carpet sporting more Eddie Bauer and Tevas than you see in LA, but the spirit is there. Plus, don’t you feel a little bit cooler than normal when you know that you’re spending your cinematic dollar supporting independent, passionate moviemakers? You should.
Just added: now we’re giving away 2 tickets to any SIFF screening you want! Enter for a chance to win by telling us what SIFF move you are most looking forward to. Winners will be announced Monday morning.
SIFF runs from May 19 – June 12th- go ahead and plot your movie-watching schedule at SIFF.net. (That way, you know when to call into work sick so you don’t miss the day matinees.) Normally we’ll be posting our favorites for each week every Monday, but today you get a bonus edition of films we either endorse, or are at least really excited about.
Movies playing this weekend that we feel qualified to endorse:
LOVE: It’s almost a shame Moon came out not too long ago, because that’s all I kept thinking about while seeing this out-of-this-world movie. Minus the abrupt ending, I was pretty captivated by the storyline that director William Eubank created. Thanks to some nudging and inspiration from the rock band, Angels & Airwaves, the soundtrack compliments this astronaut-on-a-secret-mission-that-goes-awry movie. Saturday, May 21st, 10:00pm at AMC Pacific Place 11 and Sunday, May 22nd, 1:30pm at SIFF Cinema and Saturday, June 11th, 9:30pm at Egyptian Theatre
Movies we haven’t seen but really want to:
High Road: A stoner comedy directed by Matt Walsh. I’m a huge fan of pretty much everything The Upright Citizens Brigade touches, so I am really looking forward to this. Friday, May 20th, 9:30pm at Neptune Theatre; Saturday, May 21st at Admiral Theatre; Tuesday, June 7 at Egyptian Theatre.
How to Die in Oregon: A little more stoic than my other pick for the weekend, I’ve heard lots of good buzz about this documentary about euthanasia. I definitely plan on seeing it with a box of tissues though. Friday, May 20th, 4:15 at Harvard Exit; Saturday, May 21st, 2:00 pm at AMC Pacific Place; Sunday, May 22, 3:30pm at Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center.
Yay, thanks for the rec! I’m excited for lots of the films, but most of all, I’m excited for Beginners because Ewan McGregor will be there! I’m such a fan girl!
I’ve already missed the Miranda July, boo. But now I’d see Simple Simon, Toast, My so-called enemy… hard to choose!
I am with Jenna. Beginners because I love me some Ewan McGregor!
I’m torn between Finisterrae and Karate-Robo Zaborgar. They both seen like they’d be either a lot of fun or extremely confusing.
