In case you’re not great with dates (like me), let this serve as a formal reminder that this Sunday, May 8, is Mother’s Day. So while everybody else endures crowded, overpriced brunches and blows their money on crap moms don’t even want, why not do a little prep work and check out some of OUR gift ideas. Everything qualifies as cheap, free, or at least worth the money.

- Remember the macaroni art that Mom proudly hung up on the refrigerator throughout your childhood? She’ll still swoon over anything homemade, especially if it’s actually something she wants. Over at Whole Foods, the Westlake location is offering a FREE class on homemade body scrubs today (Wednesday, May 4) from 4:00 – 6:00 pm, while over in Redmond they’ll let you pick out flowers and teach you how to make a killer bouquet for just $10. If you do end up buying something, swing by Interbay and get it wrapped up real pretty for a $2 donation to Experimental Education Unit.
- Hungry? The Bellevue and Westlake Whole Foods locations are featuring special Mother’s Day brunches on Sunday (complete with mimosas)- it’s a nice (and affordable) alternative to crowded restaurants, plus you can get your grocery shopping done for the week after. (But go easy on the mimosas if that’s your plan- been there, done that, bought $58 worth of fancy cheese.)
- If your mom’s tastes run a bit more continental, or if she’s just a big fan of gluttony, why not take her to Pintxo’s Birthday extravaganza on Sunday from 4:00 pm to close? Progressive drink specials and their bacon-wrapped date eating contest might be the best bonding experience possible. (And if she’s a real badass, encourage her to enter the contest herself!)
- Experiences are better (and cheaper) than gifts, so spend time with your mom. May I suggest a walk around Greenlake followed by a visit to the grand opening of the newest Irwin’s Bakery location? They’re giving out FREE treats to moms all day.
- Is your mom an art lover? Moms get FREE admission to Seattle Art Museum on Sunday!
- Pamper Mom (and yourself) with a trip to Elaia Spa, where they’ve got some great promotions going: get 10% of services for both of you when you come for a treatment together, and all Moms get a FREE rose on Sunday. If you can’t do a treatment on Sunday, buy her a gift certificate and get a FREE gift with purchase.
- As for me, I’m picking up some goodies from Seattle Rainwater Soap for my mom and bringing them down when I visit in a few weeks. She bought some of their amazing Skin Smoothies as souvenirs when she visited a few weeks ago, but evidently loves them so much that she doesn’t want to actually give them away. So I get to head down to Pike Place Market, say hi to Becky (the amazing soap artist) and pick up some refills. Yay!
- Just added: Take mom to dinner at Steelhead Diner and get FREE dessert! (Limit one dessert per mom- offspring must be present.) (I took my mom here for lunch during her visit a few weeks ago and she couldn’t stop raving about the broccoli- how cute is that?)
