It’s neighborhood exploration time again. Today’s edition of “The Best 5 things to do for about $5″ is all about West Seattle, that not-so-distant little enclave of Seattle that we don’t visit nearly often enough. West Seattle may take a little effort getting to, thanks to the whole giant body of water that separates it from the rest of the city, but it’s totally worth the effort- this little peninsula is a virtual treasure trove of cheap entertainment, snacks and activities. Even getting there can be an adventure!

So, without further ado, I present to you my personal favorites:
- Ride the Water Taxi. For $3, you don’t only get the self-satisfaction of knowing that you are using mass transit and helping the environment, you get a free show! At least, that’s what it feels like when you are cruising along the water on your way to West Seattle. It beats the bus hands down.
- Exercise like it’s 1996: rent some rollerblades! For just $5 an hour (neon spandex outfit not included) you can go back in time and show off your mad skating skillz the way they were meant to be displayed: along 3.5 miles of beachside trails. Do this the very next time the sun pokes it’s head through the clouds- even if it’s only 55 degrees outside. Trust me, you won’t be the only one pretending it’s summer.
- Eat amazing ice cream at Husky Deli. There may be a lot of new kids on the block in the Seattle fancy pants ice cream scene, but Husky is the original ice cream Mac Daddy. Don’t come here looking for pretentious flavors- you aren’t going to find any vegan beet-paprika swirl on their menu- but they do the classics right. I’ve heard rumors that a certain unnamed yay-today writer has a shrine in her house dedicated to the Reeses Peanut Butter.
- Have a giant burger at Zippys. They consistently make every “best of” burger list in the city and they start at under $5. ’Nuff said.
- Eat breakfast at Easy Street Records. Easy Street Records isn’t only a good place to hunt down a hard-to-find album or catch a free show, but the West Seattle location features a cafe that has a variety of yummy breakfast options for less than $5! Considering that Easy Street is also super generous with the free concert tickets (for example, you can enter today for a chance to win free tickets to see the Gorillaz on November 2!), you should definitely keep supporting this awesome local business.

Girlfriend isn’t the only one with a shrine to that ice cream, just sayin’.
